We have a couple families of gray squirrels in our yard. They make their nests of leaves, known as dreys, high in our trees. The squirrels are fun to watch year round. They are industrious, playful, at once fearless and fearful. They are handsome with tufted ears, robust tails, fur coats of varied shades of gray and brown.
I wrote these poems about our neighborhood squirrels roughly one a week throughout the year 2023; all but one: my cousin Barry DeCarli contributed the poem ‘anthropomorphic II’ and its photograph. The poems are ekphrastic – they are each inspired by an accompanying photograph.
Enjoy!
